China: Chemical Spills, Cover-ups & Earthquakes

Given that in a few short months I will be traveling through various cities in China, I find the recent news of an attempted cover up of a chemical spill just a bit troubling, particularly due to the fact that the spill has affected the municipal water system. Oh yeah, and also because the government tried to cover it up.

I won’t be drinking the water while I’m there, thank you very much, but I think it is horrible that those whom this debacle is going to effect on a daily basis, are not afforded the same luxury of choice. I wonder how many people consumed some of the contaminated water before the truth was brought about? Does the government really think that such information suppression is appropriate ethically? I’m having a hard time understanding the logic of keeping this kind of a thing quiet…
