Day 11: Hangzhou & Grand Canal [China no. 12]

The walkway of the boat in which we traveled up the Grand Canal overnight.[Note: Read a more chronological account of Day 11 on calpolymbatrip.com]

Our eleventh day turned out to be one of the most memorable and enjoyable ones for me. We toured the West Lake of Hangzhou, visited a tea plantation and accompanying small village, and then took an overnight boat trip up the Grand Canal to Suzhou. Similar to my previous posts, I include the bulk of my commentary in the photograph captions.

Peter, I have been checking back here periodically to see if you have new photos up from the trip and they are amazing. I like the captions as well and can actually picture you saying these to me as if I were there in person. I’m glad you all got to go to China and see how similar and how different life is compared to ours. In many respects, the Chinese are trying to become more like us as is the case in the big cities you have taken pictures of and then there are the small rural villages that do not have the slightest clue of what the west is like. I myself find it intriguing that there are people in the world that are not affect by the influences of western culture, mainly those from the United States. I hope one day to travel more throughout Asia to see the many things this world has to offer that we do not really have here at home. Thanks for sharing, and I look forward to more pictures as you post them.

Paul: I’m nearly done with making all of my “daily” posts. I finished prepping the images for the remaining few days and simply have to write the captions and post everything up. This has certainly been a task — I should figure out a more efficient process (hmmmmm… PDL? Value Stream Map? Muda?) before my next trip.

I’ve been reading other people’s “final thoughts” about the trip and had some interesting observations come to mind in relation to what you point out above, what a few other’s have said, and some of the memories I have regarding our stint at one of the English Corners. I’m pretty beat right now, so hopefully I can remember it for the Day 16 post…
